چکیده

In the present paper, the numerical calculation of transonic equilibria, first introduced with the FLOW code in Guazzotto et al. [Phys. Plasmas 11, 604 (2004)], is critically reviewed. In particular, the necessity and effect of imposing explicit jump conditions at the transonic discontinuity are investigated. It is found that “standard” (low-b, large aspect ratio) transonic equilibria satisfy the correct jump condition with very good approximation even if the jump condition is not explicitly imposed. On the other hand, it is also found that high-b, low aspect ratio equilibria require the correct jump condition to be explicitly imposed. Various numerical approaches are described to modify FLOW to include the jump condition. It is proved that the new methods converge to the correct solution even in extreme cases of very large b, while they agree with the results obtained with the old implementation of FLOW in lower-b equilibria. Numerical Computation of Transonic Flows with Shock Waves∗

Some recent developments in numerical methods for calcuting solutions to the transonic potential flow equation are reviewed, including (1) the construction of stable coordinate independent difference schemes; (2) the use of conservatiation form to insure proper shock jump conditions; (3) analysis of the relaxation method by the time dependent analogy; (4) accelerated iterative schemes.

Magnetohydrodynamic simulations of edge poloidal flows

Edge poloidal flows exceeding the poloidal sound speed lead to the formation of a pedestal structure [GUAZZOTTO, L. and BETTI, R., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 (2011) 125002]. This result is based on the existence of “transonic” equilibria, in which the edge region of the plasma flows supersonically with respect to the poloidal sound speed (i.e., the sound speed reduced by a factor Bθ/B), while the pla...

Strategic Jump Bidding in English Auctions

This paper solves for equilibria of sequential bid (or English) auctions with affiliated values when jump bidding strategies may be employed to intimidate one’s opponents. In these equilibria, jump bids serve as correlating devices which select asymmetric bidding functions to be played subsequently. Each possibility of jump bidding provides a Pareto improvement for the bidders from the symmetri...

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF EFFECTS OF WALL POROSITY AND SUCTION ON THE FLOW QUALITY IN A TRANSONIC WIND TUNNEL

A trisonic wind tunnel has been modified to improve its flow quality when operating at transonic speeds through perforated walls and side suctions. The usefulness of such a perforated wall, already known, is reduction of the blockage effect as well as the shock elimination. Two types of perforated walls have been used in this investigation. The first wall had a porosity of about 22% and the hol...
